The Module
What is this module?
111 English for Academic Purposes (EAP) is a core module that all students are required to take in order to obtain the Kaplan Award and to meet progression (i.e. to qualify for the university course of your choice).
Progression
What grades do I need?
To obtain the Kaplan Award, you must achieve an overall grade of 60 (with a minimum of 55 in each skill: Listening, Reading, Writing & Speaking). However, the grades you need to meet progression may well be higher than this.
Where can I find my progression requirement?
The grades you need to meet progression are included on your offer letter.
Exemption
What is exemption and how can I become exempt from this module?
Being exempt means that you do not have to take the module. To be eligible for exemption, you need demonstrate that your English language ability is at the level required for the Kaplan Award and to meet progression. To do this, you need a valid IELTS certificate (see below) or you need to ‘pass’ the EAP exam.
I already have the IELTS grades I need. Why have I not been exempted already?
You may not provided a copy of a valid IELTS certificate to KICL Academic Services.
I already have the IELTS grades I need. Why are they not accepted for exemption?
To be eligible for exemption, you must have taken Academic IELTS UKVI and your certificate must still be valid when you are due to enrol at university.
I have already met progression, but I do not want to be exempt. Is that okay?
Yes. It is great that you want to continue improving your level of English. However, you will be expected to attend all sessions and to participate fully in class. N.B. You will not be expected to take the exam.
Why are some students not eligible for exemption?
If you are under 18, you will need consent from your parents/guardians. If you are sponsored, you will need consent from your sponsor.
Will I receive a partial refund if I become exempt?
No, no fees will be returned to you if you choose to become exempt.
If I agree to exemption, will it be possible to re-join my EAP classes later in the term?
Yes, if it is possible to accommodate you in a class. However, you cannot constantly change from being exempt to not being exempt (or vice versa).
Do you accept any other English language qualifications (e.g. TOEFL, Pearson, Cambridge, Duolingo)?
No, we are not able to accept anything other than UKVI Academic IELTS.
