N.B. For questions about the module itself (including progression and exemption), please check the 111 EAP Module FAQsdocument.

The Exam

How does the exam work?

The exam is an online exam with four components (Listening, Reading, Writing & Speaking).

Is the exam similar to IELTS?

The Writing and Speaking components of the exam are quite similar to IELTS, but the Listening and Reading components are different.

How do I prepare for the exam?

You can find practice exam materials here

Is the exam compulsory?

Yes, in order to obtain the Kaplan Award and to meet progression you must take the exam.  Alternatively, you need to provide us with a valid UKVI IELTS certificate showing that you have reached the required level.

When is the exam?

Your teacher will inform you of the dates for the exam, but typically there will be an exam after the first term (Midterm exam) and at the end of the academic year.

What topics will be on the exam?

You can find a list of typical topics (Writing & Speaking) here.

I am already exempt / have already met progression.  Do I still have to take the exam?

No, if you have the overall grade you need as well as the individual grades for the four skills, then you do not have to take the exam.

I have met progression in one/two/three skills already.  Do I have to retake the whole exam again?

No, unlike in IELTS you do not always need to retake every part of the exam.  However, you may still need to if you have achieved the overall score you need.  N.B.  The Listening, Reading and Writing components are done together, so you must retake all parts, even if you have met progression in one skill.

How many times can I retake the exam?

Typically, you will be offered more opportunities to retake the exam if you have not met progression.

Will I be admitted to the exam if I am late?

Please try not to be late as it is highly likely you will not be admitted to the Listening, Reading and Writing exams if you are late.  N.B. If you are more than five minutes late, you will not be allowed to do the Speaking Exam.

Can I do the exam another day?

No, if you have missed an exam / arrived late, you will usually have to wait until the next exam.

What if happens if I have technical problems before/during the exam (e.g. not being able to connect to Zoom)?

If you experience technical problems before the exam, you should contact the Module Coordinator (see email on Module Information) ASAP.  If you experience technical problems during the exam, you should inform the examiner/invigilator ASAP (either via email or by using the Chat on Zoom).  N.B.  We may be able to assist with some technical problems, but if we cannot, you will have to wait until the next exam.
